Long before natural wellness became a mainstream industry, Helen established herself as a devoted, highly knowledgeable health professional. Her journey began in Boston, USA, where she completed in-depth health education at an immersive Raw Food program. There, she studied the macrobiotic diet in detail, learning the true biological depth of whole food, how nutrition interacts with health, and the therapeutic value of diverse dietary systems.

In 1985, Helen and her husband brought this knowledge to Pietermaritzburg, opening the Macrobiotic Health Shop. Rather than following commercial trends, they created a warm sanctuary grounded in honest counsel, pure whole foods, and genuine nutritional care for every person who sought advice.

The importance of family runs deeply through every aspect of our business. For ten dedicated years, Helen worked side-by-side with her daughter Katrina, pouring their shared passion, laughter, and tireless energy into building the health store up together into a cherished community landmark.

We dedicate a heartfelt memory to Katrina, who sadly passed away. Her vibrant spirit, radiant joy, and genuine warmth are remembered and celebrated every single day at the health store. Katrina helped build the heartbeat of Macrobiotic over ten years alongside Helen, and her kindness continues to illuminate our shelves and inspire how we care for every customer.
